A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a person who assists individuals with healthcare needs with activities of daily living (ADLs) and provide bedside care—including basic nursing procedures—all under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Common basic tasks may include any of the following:

  1. - Answer patients' call signals.
  2. - Turn and reposition bedridden patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
    - Observe patients' conditions, measuring and recording food and liquid intake and output and vital    signs, and report changes to professional staff.
    - Feed patients who are unable to feed themselves.
    - Provide patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
    - Provide patient care by supplying and emptying bed pans, applying dressings and supervising   exercise routines.
    - Bathe, groom, shave, dress, or drape patients to prepare them for surgery, treatment, or examination.
    - Clean rooms and change linens.
    - Collect specimens such as urine, feces, or sputum

Nursing Assistant Objectives

The following objectives have been established for the Nursing Assistant program of FMTI
  • Comprehend, apply and evaluate clinical information relevant to his/her role as a Nursing Assistant (evaluated by comprehensive course exam and state exam, and by employer's survey).
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of Nursing Assistant (evaluated by the final practical exam, clinical and field internship evaluations).
  • Demonstrates personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectation for the Nursing Assistant (evaluated by graduate and employer survey).
  • To assist the graduate Nursing Assistant in the recognition of his/hers need for continuing education.

The student must complete the following to be considered for graduation. These requirements must be complete prior to taking the final exam.

1. Complete all required class, lab and clinical hours

2. Pass each module exam with a minimum of 70%

3. Pass the midterm and final exam with minimum of 70%

4. Maintain an overall course average of 70%

5. AIDS and CPR completion

6. Demonstrate competencies in required critical tasks as outlined in the skills lab, clinical area and field internships.
